Hospitality ,now a days this word is widely use in every industry. The main reason is that each and every industry wants to satisfy their guest/customer with their services. Hospitality is the relationship between guest and host. Hospitality is the backbone of the Hotel industry.
So, What is Hotel? Hotel is the place where a person get food and beverage as well as accommodation facilities. And what is Restaurant? Restaurant is a place where person get only food and beverage facility [no accommodation].
For the smooth and effective Functioning ,hotels are divided into different types of departments. I m going to discuss information on these various department, because if I say Hotel ,people start thinking only about preparation of food only. But its not like that.
So this is the very brief information which I am going to provide for everyone.
1] Front Office – ‘First impression is the last impression .‘ Guest starts its first interaction with the hotel. The department looks after the registration , check-in, check-out, reservation, pick up-drop facilities, telephones.
Every hotel recruit staff in the front office department on the bases of their personality, communication skill and knowledge.
2] House Keeping – A person who visit the hotel for stay definitely aspect his/her room to be clean. This department look after the cleanliness of the rooms as well as the whole area of the hotel.
A person who can speak normal English will b appointed on entry level. Person with good , communication skill , knowledge related to cleaning agents, cleaning process etc. appointed on high level.
3] Food And Beverage Production [Kitchen] - This is divided into two section i.e. hot kitchen and cold kitchen. This is the most skillful department in the hotel. They have to perform various activates apart from cooking the food e.g. Preparing menu, costing of food, availability of food, making use of wastage, carving, presentation of dish etc
Diploma/degree holder in catering industry can apply for job in kitchen department, now a days some of the people don’t do education in catering industry but work in small hotels/restaurants and with the help of experience they find the place in 5/4 star hotels.
4] Food & Beverage Service – This is the most important department in hotel, because staff of this department is most of the time in direct contact with the guest. This department looks after the service of food and Beverage in appropriate manner, arranging the buffet, explaining the food and beverages to the guest , looking after the up selling etc.
Diploma/degree holder in hotel management or crash course in food and beverage subject can make career in this department.
5] Security – After the 9/11 Mumbai attack this department plays important role in safety of the hotel.
Related knowledge and skills are required to grab job in the Security department.
6] Human Resource – Looks after the recruitment of the hotel staff.
Diploma /degree holder in hotel management with some knowledge of Human Resource subject as well as MBA and diploma holder of Human Resource subject can apply for jobs in the hotel.
7] Accounts – Looks after the money transactions of the hotel
B.com degree holder and specialize in accounts subject can apply for the job in the department.
8] Purchase – Making arrangement of proper supplier of every aspect which are related to the hotel e.g. food, cutlery, soaps etc.
9] Sales & Marketing – Promotion and sale of the hotels product has to be done by this department e.g Hotel offers to co operate companies, packages on room booking etc.
Diploma /degree holder in hotel management with some knowledge of Sales & Marketing subject as well as MBA and diploma holder of Sales & Marketing subject can apply for jobs in the hotel.
10] Information Technology – Looks after the computer system and it functioning.
Knowledge of hardware and software ,with some bachelors degree to join the department..
11] Maintenance – Looks after the repairing , plumbing, painting, drainage system and its proper functioning.
